Lesson 1: Basic Greetings

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to greet people in Spanish in formal and informal situations.

1. Saying Hello 👋

Greetings are the first step in any conversation. Spanish greetings change slightly depending on the time of day.

English: Hello

Spanish: Hola

Hola can be used at any time of the day and in both formal and informal situations.


2. Greetings Based on Time ⏰

  • Good morning — Buenos días
  • Good afternoon — Buenas tardes
  • Good evening / night — Buenas noches

English: Good morning

Spanish: Buenos días

English: Good evening

Spanish: Buenas noches

In Spanish, “Buenas noches” is used for both “good evening” and “good night”.


3. Asking “How Are You?” 😊

English: How are you?

Spanish: ¿Cómo estás?

  • I am fine — Estoy bien
  • I am good — Estoy bien
  • I am not well — No estoy bien

Spanish: Estoy bien, gracias


4. Being Polite 🤝

  • Please — Por favor
  • Thank you — Gracias
  • You’re welcome — De nada

Spanish: Gracias


5. Simple Conversation 🗣️

A: Hola, ¿cómo estás?
B: Estoy bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?
A: Muy bien. ¡Gracias!
