Lesson 8: Tenses Overview

Don’t fear grammar! In this lesson, you will understand Spanish tenses in a very simple, practical, and speaking-focused way.

1. What is a Tense? ⏳

A tense tells us **WHEN** an action happens:

  • Now → Present tense
  • Before → Past tense
  • Later → Future tense

Good news: In daily speaking, you only need **3 main tenses** to speak confidently.

2. Present Tense (Now) 🟢

Use present tense for: daily habits, facts, and what you are doing now.

  • I eat → Como
  • I live here → Vivo aquí
  • I work → Trabajo

English: I work in an office.

Spanish: Trabajo en una oficina.

In Spanish, you usually **don’t need “I”**. The verb already shows who is doing the action.

3. Past Tense (Before) 🔵

Use past tense for actions that already happened.

  • I ate → Comí
  • I went → Fui
  • I worked → Trabajé

English: I ate pizza yesterday.

Spanish: Comí pizza ayer.

Words like ayer (yesterday), anoche (last night) often show past tense.

4. Future Tense (Later) 🟣

The easiest way to speak about the future is using: “Going to” style.

  • I am going to eat → Voy a comer
  • I am going to travel → Voy a viajar
  • I am going to study → Voy a estudiar

English: I am going to study tomorrow.

Spanish: Voy a estudiar mañana.

“Voy a” = I am going to This is the **most common future form** in spoken Spanish.

5. Tense Comparison Table 📊

Present: Trabajo aquí.
Past: Trabajé aquí.
Future: Voy a trabajar aquí.

6. Speaking Practice 🎤

Say these sentences aloud:

I eat breakfast every day → Como desayuno todos los días I ate breakfast yesterday → Comí desayuno ayer I am going to eat breakfast → Voy a comer desayuno

Focus on **speaking**, not memorizing rules. Fluency comes from usage, not grammar fear.
